  • 20 Exotic Tahitian Fruits To Try on Your Trip to French Polynesia

Spring has arrived in Mo'orea, painting the island in vibrant hues and filling the air with the sweet scent of plumeria and Tahitian gardenia. This season also brings tropical bounty: trees are heavy with ripe mangoes and creamy avocados, joining the year-round favorites of bananas, papayas, and pineapples. But to truly experience the authentic taste of Tahiti, I highly recommend discovering the unique seasonal fruits that go beyond the familiar. To guide your culinary exploration, we've curated a list of the must-try local Tahitian fruits to seek out during your Polynesian getaway. Yucca, cacao, starfruit, rima rima and rio bananas. 1. Coconut Heart (Sprouted Coconut) Let's start with the quintessential symbol of the tropics. In French Polynesia, the coconut is more than a drink with a little umbrella; it's deeply woven into island life. You’ll find it used in every form: Young Coconut Water is the most refreshing, hydrating nectar after a day in the sun. Coconut Meat (Flesh) is eaten fresh, grated, or made into milk to make poisson cru, the national dish of marinated raw fish. Coconut Milk is used in dishes like poisson cru au lait de coco and cafe au lait du coco. The Coconut Heart, last but certainly not least, is the sprouted inside of a coconut. It is a delicate, rare, and delicious delicacy. 2. Breadfruit (‘Uru) A staple carbohydrate for centuries, the breadfruit is a fundamental part of the Polynesian diet. Shaped like a small ball with little green hexagons all over, this starchy fruit is not eaten raw but cooked in a variety of ways. Try it roasted, fried into chips, or boiled and mashed. My Tahitian family often makes it by putting it directly in a fire until blackened on all sides and then carefully allowing it to cool and removing the skin with tree leaves. The heart should be soft and creamy, with a faint smoky flavor. 3. Noni (The "Cheese Fruit") Consider this the adventurous entry of our list. The noni fruit is famed for its purported health benefits, but it’s notorious for its pungent aroma, often compared to strong, ripe cheese. Most visitors try it as a juice, which is more palatable than the raw fruit. It’s a cultural experience - to try Noni is to connect with a plant deeply respected in Polynesian herbal medicine. Think of it like a wheatgrass shot. I recommend trying it out at Fare Tutava in Mo'orea, one of my favorite restaurants for their breakfast "formulas". Papaya, fe'i, green beans, rima rima bananas, and loofah. 4. Fe'i Fe'i looks like a red banana but must be cooked. Not quite like a banana and not quite like a plantain, the texture and taste are almost more like a sweet potato. A very traditional side dish, it is often served with taro and sweet potato and coconut milk or miti hue (somewhere between yogurt and milk, made from fermented coconut). My mother-in-law says fe'i is great for the kidneys. I find them to be delicious - easily one of my favorite Tahitian fruits that I'd never heard of or tried before coming to French Polynesia! 5. Banana In French Polynesia, bananas sold on the side of the street are about as fresh as it can get. Rima rima bananas are short and sweet - "rima" means "finger" in Tahitian. Rio are the slightly longer banana shown in the bottom left corner of the photo above. The hamoa variety is the popular with locals. 6. Vanilla (Vanille) Yes, vanilla is a fruit - the only edible fruit of the orchid family. French Polynesia, particularly the island of Taha'a (the "Vanilla Island"), produces some of the world's finest vanilla. The pods are thick, oily, and incredibly fragrant. You’ll find it infused into everything from sauces and desserts to Tahitian Coffee, and, of course, ice cream. Experience the rich, complex flavor behind one of the region's most famous exports. 7. Pineapple (Ananas) These pineapples are in a league of their own; this is what a pineapple is supposed to taste like. Grown in the rich, volcanic soil, they are incredibly sweet, fragrant, and less acidic than their commercial counterparts. The island of Moorea is famous for its pineapple plantations. They are small, but mighty, and undoubtedly an iconic Tahitian fruit. 8. Tahitian Chestnut (Mape) Tahitian chestnuts are a delicious and nutritious snack. With a great sweet-savory profile, they must be cooked before consuming. They are often boiled or roasted and make for quite an affordable and filling treat, commonly found at local markets. A ripe abiu 9. Abiu Not to be confused with the monkey from Aladdin, this yellow fruit with a white fleshy interior is best eaten chilled and right away, as it loses its color even faster than an avocado. A transplant from South America, it has a unique, almost gel-type texture and a sweet, caramel-like flavor. 10. Starfruit (Carambole) Easily identified by its distinctive star shape when sliced horizontally, the yellow-orange carambole is both beautiful and delicious. Its crisp texture and flavor are a refreshing mix of apple, citrus, and pear. 11. Star Apple (Pomme Etoile) You'll find this fruit in both a purple and green variety, both with a fleshy, sweet, white pulp inside similar to the texture of a mangosteen. You'll find brown seeds in the form of a star when you cut it open. I often eat it cut in half with a coffee spoon. Find them on the side of the road when in season. A ripe custard apple, or "coeur de boeuf," meaning beef heart. 12. Custard Apple (Coeur de Boeuf) Custard apple, also known as bull's heart, is a delight if you are lucky enough to find it. A local favorite, its creamy flesh truly tastes like custard, making it nature's dessert. Mangoes, purple star apples, and corossol. 13. Soursop (Corossol) This spiky green fruit might look intimidating, but its interior holds a treasure: soft, creamy white flesh with a unique flavor that’s tangy and tart with a smidge of sweetness. Try it raw or in a smoothie. Its unique, complex flavor is a true tropical delight! 14. Rambutan Rambutan may not be new for travelers who have been to Asia, but if you've never had this juicy, sweet treat, make sure you try it. As lychee's fuzzy, flashy cousin, they're as fun to eat as they are delicious. 15. Pamplemousse (The Tahitian Grapefruit) Growing up in Texas, a Ruby Red Grapefruit was a common part of our breakfast. Well folks, as it turns out, not everything is bigger in Texas. The Tahitian pamplemousse is large, with a thick, greenish-yellow skin and is sweeter and more aromatic than any grapefruit you've had elsewhere. The sweetest grapefruit I've ever had was from a sweet woman selling fruit on the side of the road in Mo'orea. If you're a citrus lover like myself, don't miss this fantastic, juicy snack. 16. Mango (Mangue) My Mexican mother used to come home with boxes of mangoes when the season came in Texas. Mangoes are one of my favorite fruits. There are multiple kinds of mangoes in Mo'orea: big, small, red, green, orange. If you’re visiting during the summer months (November to March), you are in for a treat. The mangoes here are abundant, dripping with nectar, and possess an almost floral fragrance. A big, beautiful papaya from our garden! 17. Papaya (Papaye) Available year-round, the papaya in French Polynesia is exceptionally sweet and buttery. Squeeze a fresh local lime over it for a perfect start to your day. 18. Avocado (Avocat) The avocados in French Polynesia are a revelation. They are larger than the Mexican and Californian avocados I grew up with, and have a richer, creamier texture than many varieties found elsewhere. Eaten fresh with a little salt, mashed into a spread, or simply scooped straight from the skin, they are a delicious and nutritious staple. 19. Guava Guava trees are common throughout the islands, and other parts of the world. The fragrant pink flesh is packed with flavor and vitamins. You can enjoy them raw, but they are also commonly transformed into delicious jams, jellies, and refreshing juices. Actually, guava jam is one my favorite local gam, and the Passion-Goyave Rotui juice is my favorite local juice. When our (red) passion fruit plant gives, she GIVES. 20. Passion Fruit These grow aplenty in our garden, and I can easily eat 5-10 a day, feeling grateful for each one. You'll find both yellow and red passionfruit here in Polynesia - I prefer the red variety, as I find them to be more flavorful. Eat them raw or use as an addition to a tropical beverage of your choice. Before coming here, I lived in Portland, Oregon and loved to forage all kinds of berries - they were hands down my favorite fruit. Now, I think it must be passion fruit. Ready to taste your way through paradise? Fresh fruit is one of the many perks of being on a beautiful tropical island. The best way to experience this fruity wonderland is to visit a local market like the Marché de Papeete in Tahiti, or the little outdoor market next to Super U-Are in Mo'orea. You'll also see multiple opportunities for buying fruit from local vendors on the side of the road. Go with a sense of adventure, point at what looks interesting, and enjoy! Other Tahitian fruits like like 'uru and fe'i can be found anywhere serving ma'a Tahiti. If you're ready to experience all this fruity goodness for yourself, contact us today to start planning your culinary and cultural journey to the islands of French Polynesia. Happy tasting!

  • Planning Your Perfect Miami Vacation: South Beach ✦ Wynwood ✦ Brickell

Miami is a mood—glossy towers and glittering water, pastel Art Deco and bold murals, old-school ventanitas and new-wave cocktail bars. Use this guide to plan a 3–5 day getaway that hits the big three neighborhoods—South Beach, Wynwood, and Brickell—while supporting Black and Latino-owned spots, feasting on Cuban food, and the best tours and experiences. Finally, you'll find links to book the best tours and excursions Miami has to offer. South Beach: Art Deco icons, beach time, and classic Cuban eats What to do Art Deco Walking Tour (Official)  – The Miami Design Preservation League’s daily tour is the best intro to the district’s history and design (includes museum admission). Ocean Drive status check  – Ocean Drive’s traffic setup has been in flux in 2025 due to a court fight (pedestrian plaza removals and two-way traffic orders with appeals). Before you go, check day-of updates with local outlets. Where to eat/drink (Cuban-forward & local) Puerto Sagua  (since 1962): beloved for Cuban sandwiches, ropa vieja, café con leche, and wine carafes, don't miss this South Beach staple. Havana 1957  (Ocean Dr. & Española Way): old-Havana vibe, classic mojitos and croquetas—touristy, yes, but reliably fun. Good-to-know Plan beach time early morning or late afternoon; save midday for museums, the tour, or a long Cuban lunch. Wynwood: Murals, makers, and Caribbean/Latino flavor What to do Wynwood Walls  – The open-air museum of street art; tickets and timed entry are required. Hours typically run mid-morning to early evening. Book ahead, especially on weekends. Second-Saturday Art Walk  – Galleries and studios open late with DJs/food pop-ups. It’s back with a party vibe—arrive early for parking. Where to eat/drink Wynwood Brewing Co.  – Miami’s first craft brewery, founded by a Puerto Rican family; great taproom for a pre-mural pint. Cervecería La Tropical  – Cuban-heritage brewery/garden pouring revived Havana recipes and tropical lagers—beautiful courtyard. Pro tip: Use this Black-owned business  directory for cafes, restaurants, and experiences across Overtown, Little Haiti, and beyond—easy to layer into a Wynwood day. Brickell: Skyline views, river walks, and luxe bites What to do Brickell City Centre (BCC)  – Four levels of shopping/dining anchoring Miami’s financial district; new ownership by Simon Property Group closed in June 2025, with refreshed programming and dining highlights. Evening strolls  – Walk the Miami River promenade at golden hour, then bar-hop along Mary Brickell Village/BCC. Where to eat/drink (Latino-led flavors) Marabú (BCC)  – Coal-fired Cuban  cuisine and standout mojitos; an easy one-stop before/after shopping. Excursions you will love: Biscayne Bay / “Millionaire’s Row” boat cruise  – Skyline + celebrity homes + breezes = classic Miami. Everglades experiences  – Note: airboats have restricted use inside Everglades National Park ; many airboat rides operate outside  park boundaries. For nature-first options, consider ranger-led or authorized tours inside the park. Little Havana food & culture tour  – Pastelitos, ventanita coffee, live music, cigar rollers—pair with Domino Park and Calle Ocho Walk of Fame. Wynwood street art tour  – Guided, small-group options (e-bikes/golf carts) help you cover more walls with context. • Elevate Your Travel Experience: Discover the United Polaris Club in San Francisco

Traveling can often be a mix of excitement and exhaustion, especially when it involves long layovers or extended waits at the airport. However, there’s a world of difference between spending those hours at the gate and indulging in the luxury of a business class airport lounge. The United Polaris Club in San Francisco, voted Best Business Class Lounge in the World, a true sanctuary that transforms your travel experience into something extraordinary. A Next Level Experience: Why Airport Lounge Access is Elite Airport lounges offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of busy terminals. For those flying with United Airlines, a one-time pass to the United Club is a great option, but for a luxury travel experience, the United Polaris Club is on another level. Accessible exclusively to Polaris Business Class ticket holders, the United Polaris Club provides a la carte dining with table service, and is the flagship lounge of United Airlines. If you're flying to Tahiti with United, you'll either depart from or have a layover in San Francisco. When I travel between Houston and Pape'ete, Tahiti, the layover in San Francisco is typically 3-5 hours, making it a total travel day of 18-20 hours. On long travel days like these, having airport lounge access can make the difference from a energy-sucking travel day to a fun and relaxing travel day. The lounge is located in International Terminal G Gates and is available to United Polaris Business Class passengers, Long-haul First Class passengers on a Star Alliance airline with 1 guest, and Long-haul Business Class passengers on a Star Alliance airline. Star Alliance Gold Members will be asked to go to the United Club in G or F Gates. I recommend this lounge so much that I'd suggest arriving to the airport early to enjoy it with leisure. Allow me to elaborate on the outstanding offerings of the San Francisco’s United Polaris Club and what sets it apart from other airport lounges. Access & Location The lounge is located in International Terminal G Gates and is available to United Polaris Business Class passengers, Long-haul First Class passengers on a Star Alliance airline with 1 guest, and Long-haul Business Class passengers on a Star Alliance airline. Star Alliance Gold Members will be asked to go to the United Club in G or F Gates. What to Expect at the United Polaris Club in San Francisco 1. A la Carte Dining: Inside United Polaris Club in San Francisco, on the far end of the second floor you'll find a dining room that elevates airport dining to a new level. This is hands-down the best airport dining experience I’ve ever had. My husband enjoyed the hamburger while I enjoyed the miso cod, which could have been a $40+ dish from a fine dining restaurant. It was truly delightful, and the presentation was beautiful. For dessert I opted for a tasty cheese plate paired with a heavenly Oregon Pinot Noir. Note: to make sure you’re able to get into the restaurant, approach the hostess desk as soon as you arrive to the lounge. She’ll add your name to the waitlist and you’ll get a text when your table is ready (usually 15-30 minutes. Or, maybe you’ll be lucky and be seated immediately! The restaurant has less than 20 tables and serves breakfast until 11:00 am, and a dinner menu from 11:00 am until they close at 10:30 pm. In the event you don’t have the time to make it to the restaurant, don’t worry! You can still enjoy the buffet area, which is a fabulous grab-and-go spot. From the gourmet tea and beverages, soups, fresh fruit, salad bar, and pastries, to the raw and cooked meal options, this buffet really shows just how much the Polaris Lounge sets itself apart from the United Club. Quite the difference! 2. Luxurious Showers: Refresh and Revitalize Taking a shower between flights on a long travel day hits different. Travel can be tiring, especially after long flights. The Polaris Club’s luxurious shower suites feel like a reset for your body. The spa-like facilities are equipped with everything you need to freshen up and feel revitalized. They provide fresh towels, a hair dryer, toiletries, a robe, and slippers, ensuring a comfortable and refreshing experience. Make sure you pack a change of clothes and any toiletries you may want in your carry on, and prepare to board the second leg of your flight feeling fresh and pampered. 3. Premium Bar: Sip and Unwind No airport lounge experience is complete without a premium bar, and the United Polaris Club doesn’t disappoint. The bar offers a wide selection of fine wines, beers, and premium spirits. Whether you’re in the mood for a cold beer, a glass of champagne, or a carefully curated cocktail, the bar’s sophisticated ambiance is perfect for unwinding. Most drinks are free, but some premium spirits and cocktails come at an extra charge. If you have miles, keep your United app handy and you can use miles to pay for drinks! Whether you’re paying for drinks or not, remember to keep some cash with you to tip your bartenders - they’re knowledgeable, kind, and deserving of gratitude. 4. Quiet Suites: Power Snooze Before Your Flight Sometimes you just need a nap. For travelers in need of rest, the United Polaris Club offers a comfortable, dark space for napping and sleeping with their quiet suites. These suites provide comfortable covers, pillows, eye masks, and ear plugs, allowing you to rest peacefully away from the noise of the airport. The quiet environment and thoughtful amenities make it easy to catch up on sleep and arrive at your gate and destination feeling refreshed and well-rested. Well Worth the Upgrade The way we begin and end our travels can have a strong effect on the journey itself, as well as our memories of it. For frequent travelers, the difference between a standard airport experience and the business class experience that starts with United Polaris Club is incomparable. It’s not just about having a place to sit comfortably; it’s about transforming your entire journey, even before you get on the plane. How to Gain Access The most simple answer is to purchase a business class class ticket. Another way (some may say the smarter way) would be to purchase an economy ticket and use miles to upgrade yourself to Polaris Business Class. With United's prices increasing as they are, I recommend the latter. Not flying enough to gain the miles needed? Enter the Chase Sapphire Card. This card, and other travel credit cards like it, have a “points” program you can utilize to convert your points into miles (for various airlines - not just United!), resulting in big savings on travel costs. Apply here to earn 75,000 points when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's over $900 toward travel when converting points to miles or when redeemed by Chase Travel. Transform Your Layover: From Mundane to Magical Imagine the difference: instead of spending hours in a crowded, noisy terminal, you’re enveloped in the serene luxury of the United Polaris Club. The plush seating, delicious food and drinks, and attentive service make it a place where you actually want to spend time. Long layovers become a pleasure rather than a chore, as you relax in comfort and style. Discover the United Polaris Club in San Francisco and elevate your travel experience to new heights. Once you experience the luxury and comfort it offers, you’ll understand why having access to a business class airport lounge is a game-changer for any traveler. • Insider Tips for Navigating Tahiti Airport: Fa'a'ā International Airport

Stepping foot in a foreign country can be both exciting and overwhelming. For travelers journeying to French Polynesia, it all begins at Tahiti Airport Fa'a'a, the main international gateway to over 115 stunning islands. The airport was recently renovated in 2024, when Tahiti hosted the Paris Olympics Surfing event, offering a more comfortable and convenient experience for travelers than ever before. To help you make the most of your time at Tahiti Airport Fa'a'a and start your Polynesian adventure on the right foot, we have compiled a list of insider tips that will save you time, money, and stress. 1. Secure Your Internet Connection with Tahiti Wifi: This kit from Tahiti Wifi contains everything you need to stay connected while on the islands! The Tahiti-Wifi shop is located in the middle of the airport next to Vodaphone. If you are working, hoping to upload videos, or do any type of activity that requires a strong internet connection, you may want to consider renting a reliable data pack from Tahiti Wi-fi. You can pick a package based on how many GB you will need, from 5 gb to 50 gb. The device itself is similar in size and appearance to a smart phone and comes with a charger. PS: If you have a flight with Air Tahiti, be aware they do NOT provide wifi for purchase. The airport itself does provide 1-2 hours of free wifi. 2. Know Your Terminal: Terminal 1 (Domestic Flights) Tahiti Airport Fa'a'a consists of two terminals: International and Domestic. To find the Domestic customer service desks (Air Tahiti and Air Moana), stay on the left side of the airport, near the McDonalds and Cafe Maeva. If you're arriving internationally and connecting to a domestic flight, you'll need to go through immigration and collect your baggage before checking in for the next leg of your trip. 3. Currency Exchange: While the airport does have currency exchange services, it's a good idea have some local currency (pacific francs, or XPF) on hand before arriving. This way, you can cover immediate expenses like transportation (most taxis are cash-only), or dinner from a roulotte (food truck). I recommend requesting local currency from your bank directly from your bank. Depending on your bank and where you are located, they may have to request pacific francs, which can take anywhere from 3-10 business days. 4. Relax in the Airport Lounge: Bar at L'Aviation First class travelers have access to a quaint airport lounge that has comfortable seating, light snacks, and refreshments including hinano beers. Priority Pass cardholders can receive $25-$50 cash back (depending on current terms) towards their visit to L'Aviation. 5. Duty-Free Shopping: Tahiti Airport Fa'a'a offers a variety of duty-free shops selling fragrances, cosmetics, jewelry, and local souvenirs. It is not a large shop, but if you're looking to purchase some gifts or souvenirs for loved ones back home, duty-free shopping can save you money on certain items. If you have more time, I recommend getting these goods at the Marche in downtown Pape'ete, where you will have more options at a similar price point. If you plan to travel with alcohol on your way in or out, I recommend buying from duty free. Don't worry about trying to pack alcohol in your checked bag, where it could leak, break, or make your bag overweight. It's often cheaper and more convenient to buy from duty free. 6. Taste Local Cuisine: Vini Vini & Cafe Maeva Tahiti Airport food does not disappoint. Many restaurants and cafes at the airport offer dishes that showcase the island's authentic cuisine. From delicious Poisson Cru (marinated raw tuna) to mouth-watering Tropical Fruits, indulge in the flavors of the region before or after landing. I recommend Vinivini for some great sashimi, poke bowls, or salads. Cafe Maeva has lovely smoothies, coconut water, and coffee options. Head to Aviation Bar for a full menu and full bar. 7. Stay Hydrated: Long flights and airport environments can be dehydrating. Remember to hydrate and empty your water bottle before passing through security, and drink plenty of water the 24 hours leading up to your flight. Staying hydrated is essential for feeling refreshed during your journey! Unfortunately, you're not able to refill your water bottle in the domestic terminal once through security. However, water bottles and other beverages are available for purchase. Bon voyage! Tahiti Airport Fa'a'a is the gateway to an unforgettable adventure in French Polynesia. By following these insider tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience from the moment you arrive at the airport. From savoring the local cuisine, securing wifi, to staying hydrated and relaxed, these little tricks will help you make the most of your time at the airport and set the tone for a memorable stay in the stunning islands of Tahiti. Did I forget anything? Let me know in the comments!

Moana If you haven't already seen this beautiful animated film that showcases the spirit of the Pacific Islands, I wholeheartedly recommend it. This Disney masterpiece follows the adventurous journey of Moana, a spirited young Polynesian girl, as she sets sail to save her people. The film beautifully depicts Polynesian culture, traditions, and mythology, offering a glimpse into the vibrant world you are about to explore. Available to watch on Disney Plus and also on most (if not all) flights that service Tahiti. Find Moana on Disney+ 2. Children of Teahupo'o This short documentary shows the children of Teahupo'o, home of the mythical wave. Facing mystical mountains covered in a wild and luxuriant jungle, the perfect wave of Teahupo'o wraps around the reef to create a powerful tube that attracts the best surfers on the planet. Released with the upcoming Olympic Games on the horizon, this story follows surfers and stewards who grew up in this paradise, and dedicate themselves heart to preserving the place and passing on their culture to future generations. A competitive Tahitian surfer riding a massive wave in Teahupo'o Tahiti 3. Anthony Bourdain’s 2007 French Polynesia Episode of "No Reservations" For the foodies and travel enthusiasts, Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" episode 10 of season 3 on French Polynesia is available on HBO MAX, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. The late chef and traveler takes you on a culinary and cultural exploration through the islands, sampling local delicacies, meeting locals, and delving into French influence as well as Tahitian culture. This episode is a delightful insight into the island's gastronomy and the warm-hearted people that make it so special. As a Bourdain fan, I can't say it's one of my favorite episodes - it's from an older season, well before 4k (see photo above) - but entertaining nonetheless. A still shot of Bourdain on a traditonal polynesian canoe (va'a) in Fakarava, French Polynesia. 4. Mutiny on the Bounty For a classic adventure film from 1962 with a touch of history, "Mutiny on the Bounty" is a timeless choice. Based on the true events of the infamous mutiny of 1789, the film takes place against the backdrop of Tahiti's breathtaking landscapes. A Hollywood interpretation of history, it offers a glimpse of the beauty that captivated the early explorers and still draws travelers to French Polynesia today - in more ways than one! Marlon Brando went on to fall in love with Tahiti and a Tahitian while filming this movie. Check out my article on his legacy, the Brando Hotel - a private resort on the atoll of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia . Mutiny of the Bounty 1962 Poster 5. Moana 2 Moana continues her Oceania adventures in this cute sequel that came out in late 2024. In many ways everything a sequel should be: bolder, bigger, more heart, and picking up off the energy and storyline of the first film. Blending adventure, music, and heartful storytelling, I enjoyed this movie more than I expected I would! Now available on Disney Plus and on most airlines that service Tahiti. Find Moana 2 on Disney+ As you prepare for your trip to French Polynesia, tuning into the programs above will transport you to the heart of this magical destination. Each story captivating in it's own way, tuning into any of the programs above can help you revel in excitement for your upcoming trip and gain a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Polynesian culture and history. • How To Be a Sustainable Traveler: Leaving a Positive Footprint Around the World

Sustainable travel is about making conscious choices that reduce our impact on the environment and support local communities. Being a sustainable traveler is not about giving up the joy of exploration; it's about embracing conscious choices that protect the planet and support local communities. By adopting simple practices, we demonstrate our care and efforts to protect and love this Earth. Read on for 8 ways to be part of the solution in preserving the beauty of our world. 1. Avoid Single Use Plastics Reduce plastic waste by carrying reusable shopping bags and refusing single-use plastics like water bottles and straws. Traditional plastic bottles made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) can take hundreds of years to fully biodegrade under natural conditions. Even worse, plastic bottles and other single-use plastics don't fully biodegrade like organic material -microplastics persist in the environment for centuries and pose an ongoing threat to wildlife and their ecosystems. 2. Conserve Water and Energy In your accommodations, be mindful of water and energy consumption. Small actions like closing the water faucet when brushing your teeth or shaving, turning off lights, air conditioning, and other electronic devices when leaving your room, can make a meaningful, positive impact. Use towels and bed linens as you would at home (multiple times) before requesting new ones to reduce laundry loads and conserve water. 3. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle One of the easiest sustainable practices as a traveler is to carry a reusable water bottle. This simple act reduces plastic waste and helps keep our oceans and landfills clean. Most destinations have safe drinking water available, and if you're unsure, consider using water purifiers, refill stations, or asking on-site bartenders or waiters to refill your bottle for you. Hotel gyms typically have a refill station, as well. 4. Respect Wildlife and Nature Maintain a safe distance from wildlife and avoid feeding them. When exploring nature, stick to designated trails and respect any guidelines set by park authorities to protect fragile ecosystems. If you have the good fortune of encountering wildlife within your accommodations, be respectful and do not try to touch the animal unless guided to do so by a professional. When trying to capture these moments on video, do not follow the animal. 5. Engage with the Local Culture and Support Local Businesses Learn about the local customs, traditions, and history of the places you visit. Show respect for cultural differences and be open to understanding diverse perspectives. Support local communities by choosing locally-owned accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators. This helps to empower the local economy and preserve the region's authenticity. 6. Pack Eco-Friendly Toiletries You don't have to buy new "eco-friendly" products for it to be eco-friendly! Instead, try repurposing or reusing something you already have. Choose eco-friendly and biodegradable toiletries to minimize harm to the environment. Avoid products containing microbeads and opt for refillable containers when possible. Over the last few years, I've enjoyed refilling my favorite moisturizer jars with products that can be bought in bulk. 7. Leave No Trace Last but not least, adhere to the "Leave No Trace" principle. Ensure you leave the places you visit as you found them, without leaving any litter or marks behind. You can also consider carbon offset programs! If you've used one, I'd love to hear about your experience below. 8. Choose Eco-Friendly Transportation Opt for eco-friendly transportation options like walking, cycling, or using public transport whenever safe and when possible. Not only does this reduce carbon emissions, but it also allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and scenery. As travel enthusiasts, we have the privilege of exploring the world and experiencing new cultures. This privilege comes with a responsibility to protect the beautiful destinations we visit for future travelers and generations. By implementing these simple practices, we can make a positive impact on the environment and leave a lasting legacy for future travelers to cherish. Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for joining us on a journey of responsible travel!
